Acupuncture is one of the main therapeutic treatments of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is not an alternative medicine but a whole medical approach in itself. It has its own anatomy and physiology that differs in many aspects from the western approach especially as it is a far more holistic model. Western medicine treats symptomatically, that is it seeks to eradicate symptoms and views as lack of symptoms as a definition of health. TCM on the other hand seeks to treat body, mind and spirit which means dealing with the physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms of disease. In the west we understand many of the basic principals of physical and emotional disease but often lack a true understanding of what spiritual disease is. Spiritual does not mean religious. Our spiritual nature is linked to our life-path or destiny and has to do with a sense of life being fulfilling. If one is not following a fulfilling path, disease will sooner or later manifest. To walk a spiritual path means to walk moment by moment with a sense of being in the right place, at the right time and doing the right thing. It means not compromising our happiness in the pursuit of material gain but doing all things with pleasure whilst maintaining a sense of being aware of the well being of our fellow human beings and the planet we live on. Acupuncture as practiced in the west can often lose its power when patients and practitioners focus on the eradication of symptoms (this is especially true of many western medical practitioners who have only trained in the techniques of acupuncture and do not fully understand its underlying principles). Traditional acupuncture treats body, mind and spirit. The application of needles and the choice of points used is made more powerful through the intent of the practitioner. When an acupuncturist understands the need for total balance and harmony and embodies that balance in his or her daily life, then treatments can be both powerful and deep. As the Zen proverb states, "Unless the medicine stuns you, it won't cure the disease." The experience of acupuncture treatment needs to be life-changing if true health is to be realised.
